An Eternal Beauty
Where? Mart, Rovereto
The Classical Canon in Early 20th-century Italian Art
At Mart Museum of Rovereto the wide exhibition dedicated to one of the richest moment of the Italian art of the 20th century. It represents the second stage of a project realized in collaboration with the Fundación MAPFRE of Madrid.
Through absolute masterpieces of the beginning of the 20th century, the exhibition “An Eternal Beauty” proposes an itinerary through the works of the masters of Italian art, that look back to the past and to the classic rules, as a source of inspiration. The exhibition path is divided in seven sections:
- Metaphysics of time and space
- Evoking the ancient
- Return to the figure: the portrait
- The Nude as Model
- The Poetry of Objects
- The Seasons of Life
On exhibition more than hundred works of some of the most significant protagonists of Italian art: Carrà, Casorati, de Chirico, de Pisis, Savinio, Severini, Sironi but also Bucci, Cagnaccio, Donghi, Dudreville, Funi, Malerba, Marini, Martini Marussig, Oppi and Wildt.
The return-to-order climate in Europe, devastated by the First World War, brought forth artistic ventures and movements – Metaphysical art, the experiences surrounding “Valori plastici“, the Novecento Italiano, and the poetics of Magical Realism – that sought to recover and reaffirm themes and formal solutions from the artistic tradition. Allegorical subjects, portraits, figures, landscapes and still-lifes were interpreted in a new idiom providing a modern vision of the values of ancient and Renaissance art. Technical knowledge gained the status of a tool for representing and transfiguring the real.
The exhibition weaves a dense network of visual references with works of the Mart permanent collections.
