Afghan carpets as propaganda tools
One of the major European collections of war carpets on display in Rovereto
Right from the name, the exhibition at the Depero Futurist Art House in Rovereto invites visitors to step physically on the carpets, to witness their distance from every phenomenon of violence and war, through this symbolic gesture.
The war carpets are born as result of the Soviet occupation of the Afghans territories in 1979 and they came back with a renewed impetus in 2001, after the arrival of Anglo-American military forces after 11th September.
These carpets are propaganda tools, with war – and violence – symbols, and incite to take up arms against invaders. These carpets they are still made by afghans children hands, with new iconography glorifying war and jihad.
In association with Cooper Action Onlus, Rome.
