In the south of Rovereto Discover hundreds of footsteps of dinosaurs, set up in the Jurassic time, when the Adige Valley used to appear as a wide muddy plain!
In the South of Rovereto were identified hundreds of footsteps of dinosaurs, frequently organised as real tracks.
The footsteps of dinosaurs date back to 200 billion years ago and were discovered in 1990 from a passionate naturalist from Rovereto.
The footsteps can be divided in the different types:
- The herbivorous Vulcanodontidi were from 5 to 6 meters long and reached a weight between one and two tons, although the site also includes the footsteps of an animal, that was more than 10 meters long.
- The littler herbivorous Ornitischia
- The carnivorous Ceratosauri used to measure 4 – 5 meters long and weighted 100 – 800 kg ca.

In the Jurassic era the current Adige Valley used to appear as a wide muddy plain bordering with the warm sea of Tetide: the heavy steps of dinosaurs remained impressed in the mud, that later became grey limestone, letting the conservation of footsteps.
How to reach the footsteps of dinosaurs
From the city follow the signs to the Casteldante Monumental Shrine, that will lead you to the Strada degli Artiglieri (Street of Artillerymen). After 4 km you will reach the parking of the “Baita degli Alpini”, from where you can walk for 30 minutes to reach the track of footsteps.
Warning: the access to the Strada degli Artiglieri is only allowed to vehicles under 2,50 m width and 8,70 m long.
On the trail of dinosaurs
From spring to autumn, you can take part in guided tours for children and adults to discover the geological history of the area! The excursions, organized by the Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto, are by reservation.
We recommend suitable clothing for hiking (boots or sneakers, anorak or umbrella). The meeting is at the paleontological area, that has to be reached by own car. Price: adults € 5,00, children up to 18 years and over 65 € 3,00. Free for subscribers and children up to 6 years.
