Lavini di Marco

Among ancient landslides, hidden lakes and unspoiled nature

The Lavini di Marco biotope is a protected natural area of the Autonomous Province of Trento, covering 35.57 hectares. This territory holds great geological and archaeological value, so much so that in 1992 it was recognised as a biotope to ensure its protection. Among its most fascinating features, located in the immediate surroundings and on the nearby mountain slope, are prehistoric footprints preserved in the rock, witnesses of a distant past that make this area unique and rich in history.

It is a unique natural environment, characterised by two small wetland areas: Laghet Grand and Laghet Picol. These bodies of water are located in an area shaped by ancient landslides, caused by the sliding of limestone rocks along layers of discontinuity. The largest landslide dates back to before the last Ice Age, but the landscape has continued to transform over time through new ground movements.

The two lakes formed inside dolines, natural depressions among landslide deposits. The water level varies depending on the underground water table, as the bottom is permeable and porous. Around the lakes, typical wetland vegetation develops, including some species that are rare in Trentino. Amphibians such as newts and the common toad also live here.

The biotope is home to a black pine forest, while in the sunniest areas grow plant species adapted to dry and limestone-rich environments.

This contrast between water, rock and greenery creates a fascinating landscape, a testament to the power of nature and the passage of time.
