E noi che ne sappiamo?

With the exhibition “E noi cosa ne sappiamo?” ('And what do we know about it?'), MITAG reflects on the ways in which Italian colonial history from the late nineteenth century to World War II has been told, and how it can be narrated today.

The Museum has launched a research project on its colonial collections and on items preserved in other regional museums, joining the international debate on the management of colonial heritage that has already developed in other countries.

The exhibition aims to stimulate a critical reflection on how the Italian colonial imagination was built on stereotypes and romanticized views, which were used to legitimate domination and violence. The objects and images on display also challenge us on the omissions and prejudices that persist today.

Objects, images, documents, propaganda tools, and personal belongings kept in the storage facilities of numerous regional museums are presented with their dual significance: as testimonies that served to construct colonial imagery and propaganda, but also as essential sources for a critical knowledge of Italian colonial history.

Through an intersection with the language of art, the narrative is enriched by an artistic installation created by Martina Melilli, in collaboration with Attila Faravelli.

The exhibition project and its related initiatives are taking place as part of the Euregio Museum Year 2025, which is dedicated to the themes of justice, social equality, and forms of resistance.
