Discovering the Romea Strata

On the traces of the Via Claudia Augusta to immerse yourself in the Romea Strata, the historical connection between Upper Europe and Rome.

The Romea Strata was an important European route, travelled by pilgrims from Central and Eastern Europe on their way to Rome: from the Baltic Sea they crossed Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria until they crossed the Alps and entered north-eastern Italy via Tarvisio.

82 stages winding along 7 Italian regions for a total of 1400 km. The largest and liveliest system of roads of an ancient pilgrimage that can still be travelled today.

The Romea Strata originated from bundles of trade and communication routes that were later adopted as paths of faith.

An important offshoot came from the Via Claudia Augusta, which via the Brenner Pass and northern Vallagarina reached the main route of the Romea Strata via Vallarsa and what in Roman times was called the Via Vicetia.

On Sunday 09 October come and walk along a stretch of this important pilgrimage route, accompanied and guided by Gregorio Pezzato, head of the Centro Studi Associazione Nazionale Alpini in the stages around Rovereto:

• 07 am meeting at the Campana dei Caduti
• 08 am breakfast by GS Montagnola
• 10 am mass at the Church of Albaredo
• 11 am snack organised by the Circolo Albaredo
• 1:30 pm packed lunch
• 2 pm coffee at the Costa Violina hut organised by the Lizzanella Alpine Group
• 4 pm guided tour of the Campana dei Caduti
