Where? Mart

When?

His time. And our time

Great exhibition in Rovereto with the works of Botticelli juxtaposed with contemporary art masterpieces that take inspiration from the Florentine artist.

Botticelli. His time. And our time

From an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi and Eike Schmidt
Curated by Alessandro Cecchi and Denis Isaia
In collaboration with Associazione MetaMorfosi
Mart is once again crossing time boundaries to measure up artists and movements from different eras. Undisputed centre stage player in ‘his and our times’, Sandro Botticelli is present in Rovereto with a significant nucleus of masterpieces such as Pallade e il Centauro, from the Uffizi, Venere from Turin’s Galleria Sabauda and Compianto sul Cristo morto on loan from the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan.
The first section of the exhibitiondevoted to Botticelli and his workshop, presents the artist and his work as one of Lorenzo il Magnifico’s favourites.
The masterpieces span the various phases of Botticelli’s life. The artist was an authentic interpreter of the profound social, political, cultural and artistic changes that took place in Florence in the second half of the fifteenth century. The exhibition also explores works by Filippo Lippi, Filippino and various other great artists, including Antonio del Pollaiolo and Andrea del Verrocchio.
With contemporary masterpieces spanning the 1960s to the present day, the second part of the exhibition provides evidence of Botticelli’s influence on contemporary visual culture, becoming a pivot around which our modern concept of “beauty” revolves. Italian Pop artists such as Mario CeroliGiosetta Fioroni and Cesare Tacchi drew on his work as did Michelangelo Pistoletto and Renato Guttuso in a slightly later period.
Botticelli’s influence makes itself felt in the work of international artists such as Fernando BoteroDavid LaChapelle, Oliviero Toscani and John Currin, comes to life in fashion and film, makes its way onto the glossy magazine covers for which Kate Moss poses and shares the stage with the photos of the most important influencer in the world, Chiara Ferragni.
