Brentonico, the gem of Monte Baldo

It is the first mountain you see when you enter Trentino. Here you can trek or mountain bike in summer and ski on Polsa, San Valentino and San Giacomo slopes in winter

Brentonico plateau: on the Trentino side of Monte Baldo, between river Adige and Lake Garda, in the heart of Monte Baldo Natural Park. It is known by all European botanists as “The Garden of Italy” for its rare plants and flowers.

Brentonico is the name of the county seat, and its municipality includes other districts and mountain villages which are Castione, Cazzano, Crosa, Cornè Prada, Saccone and Sorne as well as the tourist centres of San Giacomo, San Valentino and Polsa. Castione is also known as the birth place of Cristoforo Benedetti (1657-1740), the sculptor, stonemason and architect that worked a lot in Trentino (in the cathedral of Trento and in the Madonna del Monte sanctuary in Rovereto), but also in Innsbruck (“Colonna di Saint Anne).

The botanical garden of Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi has some of the 1.655 plants and flower varieties that grow on Monte Baldo, most of which can be found in the Alps. Participate to a guided tour, which includes a visit to the palace exhibits and the Fossil museum. Visit the old Romanesque crypt and the medieval church of SS. Pietro and Paolo. Relax in the shade of old horse-chestnuts in Cesare Battisti park. In Sorne you can visit Mulino Zeni, a Nineteenth century millin perfect working order.

In Spring

During the blossom season you can meet and learn the rare plants and flowers that color Brentonico upland. Follow the numerous panoramic routes and choose the more suitable for you, such as the itinerary that starts from Polsa, continues to Bocca d’Ardole, Corno della Paura and reaches Mount Vignola or also the route in the wild Val del Parol to admire the precious flowers and mountain pasture animals.

In Summer

Summer on Monte Baldo means outdoor activities! Do you love hiking, biking or horse riding? Explore the large network of forest paths with a breathtaking view of Lake Garda or the Path of Peace among trenches, tunnels and fortifications of the Great War! Every now and then have a break at one of Monte Baldo mountain huts, where you can admire the sun rising and taste delicious cheese and milk.

The Brentonico plateau is the base of children’s summer camps and training of professional soccer teams and the Italian and German national ski teams.

In Autumn

Walk through the majestic trees of the upland discover the warm autumn colours and delicious flavor. In this season the renowned chestnuts of Castione are the protagonists of local events and menu, together with other tipical Trentino dishes: canederli, gnocchi, potato polenta, cheese, strudel and zelten.

You can taste traditional delicacies not only in local restaurants, but also by taking part to Golosaneve and Golosabici: a food and wine multiple-step path on Monte Baldo. The first one will took place in winter, while the second one in summer, be sure to take your mountain bike with you.

In Winter

The nearest slopes in Trentino are located here: just an hour from Verona you can ski on wide and sunny slopes, and avoid the hassles of traffic and finding parking. Ski is not your sport? Choose among other winter activities: snowshoeing, ice-skating, snow playground and sledding!
