Volano, vineyards and popular devotions

A few kilometers north of Rovereto you can discover the Church of San Rocco and the Hermitage of Santa Cecilia and visit the lively small community of Volano.

Volano is located on the left bank of the Adige river, about 4 km north of Rovereto, in the heart of Vallagarina, and is also accessible by bicycle along the Adige bike path.

A must-see during the festival of San Rocco and “Memoriae”, the festivity dedicated to popular devotions and rural life, the church of San Rocco is a small gothic gem with spectacular frescoes. Seize the chance to see one of the most interesting artistic symbols of the early Renaissance in Trentino.

As we continue our journey we arrive at the Pieve della Purificazione di Maria, religious building with precious marble altars and a bell tower 47 meters high.

Along the old imperial road that crosses the town you will find many palaces with elegant facades, embellished with carved portals and the remains of ancient paintings. Strolling around you will discovering interesting capitals: one, dating back to 1404, was dedicated to Saints Sebastiano and Rocco and another depicts Jesus meeting his Mother.

The tower Des Tor, an ancient masonry building located at the top of a hillock, dominates the town.

In Volano you can go on excursions by mountain bike or on foot to Monte Finonchio. The art itinerary that connects the three municipalities of Calliano, Besenello and Volano is also worthy of note. Along the itinerary you will find the Hermitage of Santa Cecilia at the top of a “stair” carved out of the rock, with a spectacular view of the Adige Valley, from Trento to Rovereto.
